How to Check IP Parameters (IP Address, Subnet, Netmask, Router Gateway) in Mac OS X and Windows Operating System Environments
Overview
This document outlines the steps to reveal your computer IP parameters. Relevant settings include:
- IP Address
- Subnet(Netmask)
- Gateway Address(also known as therouter'soraccess point's(AP) IP address, which is useful for opening the router's web page or embedded web server (EWS) page.
Once you have obtained the gateway address, type this address into your Web browsers URL field to open your router's EWS; e.g., 192.168.0.1* entered as http://192.168.0.1. The * value variesby router manufacturer.
Macintosh
Checking settings in Macintosh OS X
- From theDock, click the System Preferences icon.
- System Preference icon for Macintosh OS10.3.x,10.4.x, and10.5.x
- System Preference icon for Macintosh OS10.6.x,10.7.x, and10.8.x
Alternatively, you may click on the Apple icon, and then System Preferences. - Click Network.
- Click on the Network adapter used; e.g., Airport, Ethernet, etc. Note the values of the settings mentioned above.Alternatively, you may clickAdvanced. Under the TCP IP tab, you will see theIP Address,Subnet Mask,Router, orGatewayvalues.
Alternative procedures in Macintosh OS X
The IP parameters are not easily distinguishable with this method.
- From theDock, click theTerminalicon.
- Go toMacintosh HDand then openUtilities.
- Typeifconfigat the prompt.
Microsoft Windows
Checking TCP/IP settings in most Microsoft operating systems
- Click Start or the Windows logo.
- ClickRun.Alternatively, press theWin key+Ron the keyboard to open the command prompt screen.
- In the Run dialog, type cmd or command, and then click OK.
- At the prompt, type ipconfig or ipconfig /all, and then pressENTERon the keyboard.
- Take note the values of the settings mentioned above.

Microsoft Windows XP
:- Click Start, right click My Network Places, and then click on Properties.
- Right-click onLocal Area ConnectionorWireless Network Connection.
- ClickStatus.
- Click theSupporttab, and take note the values of the settings mentioned above.
