A '900.80 Service RIP Software' Error Is Appearing on a Lexmark X642e, X644e, or X646e Printer

What you will see
The printer displays a
900.80
Service RIP Software
error.
What This Error Means
A
900.80 Service RIP Software
error indicates a problem with the current print job or with a part within the scanner unit of the printer.
Recommended actions
Step
Action
1
Power off the printer. Leave it powered off for ten seconds or more to clear its memory.
2
While the printer is off, clear any pending print jobs from the computer or the network queue. This will prevent any possibly corrupted print jobs from being re-sent to the printer and causing the error when it is powered back on.
3
Power on the printer again.
  • If the printer goes to the
    Ready
status, try printing again. If the error does not return, continue using the printer.
  • If the
    Service RIP Software
error returns when the printer is powered up or when you try to print again, continue with the steps below. A stuck or broken sensor flag that is located on the underside of the automatic document feeder (ADF) may be the cause of this error.
4
Power off the printer once more.
5
Open the upper ADF unit by pressing the green latch.

Check the sensor flag highlighted in the picture below. Make sure the flag moves freely.

  • If the flag appears to be broken or missing, the printer will require service. For information on arranging repair service, contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized repair center.
  • If the flag appears to move correctly, or if you are able to find and correct the issue, power on the printer again. If the error does not appear on power up, try printing again. If the error does not return, continue using the printer. If the problem does return on power up or when printing, however, confirm that the printer is connected directly into a grounded wall outlet. In rare instances, surge suppression and un-interruptible power supply (UPS) devices can generate false
    900.80
    error messages.
