displays a
982.06 Service Engine Communications
error.
Explanation of the Issue
Your
Lexmark C74x / X74x Color Laser Printer/MFP
encounters a
242.05 Paper Jam
when you try to print from the paper feed option (also referred to as '
Tray 2
' when installed). After removing the tray from the paper feed option in order to clear the jammed paper, and then installing it back to the printer/MFP, a
982.06 Service Engine Communications
error displays. This issue occurred when you tried to open the paper feed option's
front door
and the printer/MFP rocked slightly, thus causing a loss of communication between the paper feed option and the printer/MFP. To correct this, follow the suggested steps below.

Reset power or power the printer/MFP off and on. In most cases, simply powering it off and on will clear the error. This is especially true if someone moved or bumped into the printer/MFP. Such can cause a loss of communication (i.e., a brief separation), between a paper feed option and the printer/MFP. In general, observe the following guidelines when caring for the printer/MFP:
  • Make sure the printer is positioned so people do not bump into it.
  • Do
    not
use excessive force when pushing in a paper tray or closing a lid.
  • Make sure the printer is on a level surface.
Note:
If you have already tried powering the printer off and on, then skip ahead to
Step 2
.
2
Power off the printer/MFP again and unplug the power cable from the device.
3
Lift the printer/MFP up off the
paper feed option
, also called as
Tray 2
.
Caution!
For safety reasons, it is recommended that at least two people lift the printer/MFP.
4
Move the
Tray 2
option to a stable furniture unit (table, etc.) or the floor.
5
Power on the printer/MFP again without the
Tray 2 feed option
installed. If this does clear the error, try reinstalling the
Tray 2 feed options
you removed.
6
Place the printer/MFP and the
Tray 2 feed options
into a flat and stable furniture unit or the floor.
7
Power the printer/MFP back on and try printing again.
