Print Quality Issue ‑ Toner Not Fused to the Page

Issue description

Unfused image output prints that you can easily smear or smudge.

Solution

Follow these steps in succession, or jump directly to a topic if you have already eliminated any of these possible causes:
  • Check for use of non-genuine Lexmark Supplies / refilled cartridges / ‘compatible’ supplies
  • Confirm the correct Paper Type for the specified tray
  • Confirm correct Paper Weight for the Paper Type
  • Confirm media meets approved paper specifications
Troubleshooting
  1. Check for the existence of a
    non-genuine Lexmark supplies*
    or refilled cartridges. Use the on-line authentication tool to verify whether you have a Genuine Lexmark cartridge.
  2. Check the
    Paper Type
    for the media loaded in the printer's paper tray. To do this from the
    Embedded Web Server (EWS)
    :
    1. Open a web browser and enter http://printer's_IP_address into the address field.
    2. Click
      Settings
      >
      Print Menu
      >
      Tray configuration
      >
      Paper Size / Type
      .
    3. Change the type, and click
      Submit
      .
    4. Test.
  3. Check the
    Paper Weight
    for the type of media selected.
    To do this from the control panel
    :
    1. From the home screen, navigate to:
      or

      Settings
      >
      Paper Menu
      >
      Paper Weight
      .
    2. Adjust to desired paper type setting.
    3. Press the
      Submit
      or
      button.
    4. Test
    To do this from the
    Embedded Web Server (EWS)
    :
    1. Open a web browser and enter http://printer's_IP_address into the address field.
    2. Click
      Settings
      >
      Print Menu
      >
      Paper Weight
      .
    3. Change the paper weight for the type selected in
      Step 2
      and click
      Submit
      .
    4. Perform a test print.
  4. Confirm media meets
    approved paper specifications
    . This is found under Paper and specialty media guide. Switch media to an approved media type and weight and again test.

Service action

  1. Check the
    input line voltage
    from the
    power outlet
    used for this device. Reference the
    voltage check
    described in the Service Manual.
  2. Check the
    room temperature
    to make sure that the device is operating within the approved environmental operating specifications.
    One example
    : A printer on a cold truck dock can have fuse-grade problems.
  3. Follow the steps in the service manual for "
    Toner Smear Check
    ".
    1. First service call –
      Fuser
      Note:
      This is especially important if rolls or belt are damaged.
    2. Second service call –
      Low voltage power supply
      (LVPS).
  4. Should there be additional concerns or questions, contact the
