How to install a Lexmark printer driver in safe mode; Microsoft Windows 95; Microsoft Windows 98; Microsoft Windows Me; Microsoft Windows 2000; Microsoft Windows XP

Solution

In "safe mode", Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, Microsoft mouse driver, no network connections) and the minimum device drivers needed to start Windows. You cannot read from the CD-ROM drive and you cannot print to a USB port. Accordingly, in order to install in safe mode, you need to create a copy of the driver on the desktop in "normal" or standard mode first, as explained in 'Copying files to the desktop' below.
Copying files to the desktop:

  1. Before you can copy files to your desktop, you must first create a new folder for the files:

    1. Right click on the desktop and select New, Folder.

    2. Give the folder a name (for example: Drivers).

Right click the My Computer icon on the desktop and then click Explore.

When Windows Explorer opens, click the + (plus) sign beside the CD-ROM drive.

    Follow the appropriate path:

Old printers (2030, 2050, 2070 and 3000): Copy the Disk 1 and Disk 2 folders under Language.
3200 printers and printers up to Z11, Z31, Z51 and in the Zx2, Zx3, Xx3 ranges: The path is /products/language/windrv (where is your language).
Right click on the windrv folder and select Copy.
Open the folder you have just created on the desktop. Right click within it and select Paste.

Restart the PC in safe mode. (See the instructions applicable to your operating system below.)

Open the new folder on the desktop in safe mode, double-click Disk 1, then double-click the setup.exe file to start the printer installation.

Z13, Z23, Z33, Zx5 printers:
Follow the procedure in 'Copying files to the desktop' above, but using the following path in step 4 instead:
/Drivers /Win9x /language

Note:
The difference is because of the Solution Centre technology.
Restarting the system in safe mode:
Windows 95:

  1. Restart the computer.

  2. When you see Starting Windows 95 on the screen, immediately press the F8 key. Windows starts in safe mode.

Windows 98 / Windows Me:

  1. Restart the computer.

  2. During the reboot, hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears.

  3. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu and press ENTER. Windows starts in safe mode.

Windows 2000:

  1. Click Start, Shut Down, Restart, OK.

  2. While the PC is restarting, press the F8 key.

  3. When the Startup menu appears, select safe mode.

Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, Turn Off Computer, Restart, OK.

  2. While the PC is restarting, press the F8 key.

  3. When the Startup menu appears, select safe mode

Windows NT:

  1. Change the attributes for boot.ini so that it is not Read Only. (The boot.ini file is found in the root directory of the first partition.)

  2. Open the file using MS Notepad or another text editor (not  Microsoft Word or any word processor). Listed in the [operating systems] section are all the operating systems the NT boot loader can launch.

To create a new safe mode entry, copy one of the existing NT entries and paste it onto a new line.
At the end of the new entry, add /sos and change the description of the entry to reflect that it is safe mode. Adding /basevideo will launch NT with the default VGA driver. The new entry should look something like this:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 [Safe Mode]" /sos /basevideo

Your changes will take effect after the next reboot.
