Solution

What you will see

When you open Printing Preferences in the driver or select Properties, Setup, PreferencesOptions or other via the software application, you are not able to select Duplex under the Page Layout tab.
Click here  for image. This article gives several possible explanations for this difficulty.

Prerequisites for duplex printing

The ability to select duplex printing requires the following:
  • -The printer must recognize the physical duplex option.
  • -The duplex option must be recognized by the driver under Properties > Install Options.

  • -The selected Paper Type must not be:
    -Transparency
    -Labels
    , or
    -Cardstock/Extra Heavy Paper.

  • -Under Page Layout > More Page Layout Options, the following options must not be selected:
    -Booklet printing
    -
    Poster printing

Printer recognition of duplex option

Some printers and MFPs have the duplex option built into the physical printer while others require physical connection of the duplex option or tray.
To check for an installed duplex option:
Print a Menu Settings page and check for DUPLEX under Device Information > Installed Features.  (The embedded web server path is Reports > Device Settings > Device Information > Installed Features.)
If DUPLEX does not appear as an installed option, consider the following possible reasons:

-The duplex drawer or tray is not properly connected to the printer.  Try reseating the printer onto the duplex option so that the duplex option's upper auto-connect connector is properly aligned with the printer's bottom auto-connect connector.  NOTE:  A "982 duplex error" may also result from this condition.

-Turn the printer off for about 15 seconds, and then turn the printer back on. If the printer was quickly turned off and on, a low-voltage power condition could prevent the peripheral from being acknowledged during the initial printer start-up sequence.

-The auto-connect connector is damaged on the printer or duplex option.  Call Lexmark Technical Support.

Paper Types:  Transparency, Labels, Cardstock and Extra Heavy Paper

All of these paper types will disable 2-sided printing.  Follow the below instructions to make sure you have an acceptable paper type.
Windows environments:

Method 1 (Recommended)
  1. Open Printing Preferences
XP users: Click Start > Printers and Faxes > then right-click on the print queue or print object.
Microsoft Vista users: Click Start > Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Printers > then right-click on the print queue or print object.

  2. Click on the Paper tab.
  3. Next to Paper Type, make sure none of the following is selected: Transparency, Labels Cardstock and Extra Heavy Paper
  4. If necessary, change this setting to Plain paper or another acceptable paper type, and click on Apply

Method 2
If Method 1 results in Use Printer Settings as the Paper Type, you can verify and then change the printer's Paper Type setting. Choose the method that best suits your needs below.

  • Since the driver setting overrides the printer setting, change the driver's paper type as in Method 1 directly above and click Apply.

  • Print a Menus Settings Page, and check the Paper Type for the desired tray.

  • Use the printer operator panel buttons to navigate to Paper Menu > Tray (#) > Paper Type and change the printer's paper type as necessary.
  • You can change the paper type via the embedded web server if the printer resides on a network. To do this, enter http://Printer_IP_address*, click on Configuration or Settings > click on Paper Menu > change your paper type > click Submit

  • The Local Printer Setup Utility provides this capability if you have a direct USB cable connection.
    * - You can find the device TCP/IP address by printing a network settings page.
(#) - The number of paper input trays may require you to check paper types for more than one tray.

Booklet printing

The driver's Booklet layout setting will prevent all driver duplex options. To check if this is causing the issue:

  1. Open Printing Preferences
XP users:  Click Start > Printers and Faxes > right-click on the print queue or print object.
Microsoft Vista users:  Click Start > Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Printers > right-click on the print queue or print object.
  2. Click on the Page Layout tab.
  3. Click on More Page Layout Options.
  4. Make sure booklet printing is not selected.

Poster printing

The driver's Poster layout setting will prevent all driver duplex options.  To find out if this is the cause, see the instructions for Booklet printing above.  Click here for image.
