Problem

Scan unit makes noises as it is powering on

Solution

To resolve this, remove the shipping retainer from the scan unit.

Look underneath the scanner. You should see a picture of a locker (locked and unlocked).

Look for the switch that locks or unlocks the optical unit. (This is generally located underneath the lamp but on some scanners it may be located in the middle of the bottom side.)
