'Connection Failed' Error Message When Trying to Install the Printer on a Wireless Network

When you try to set up the All-In-One/printer using the supplied software, the Wireless Configuration Utility portion of the installation returns a Connection Failed error message.

The following are the most likely causes of a Connection Failed error message:
- -Wrong network name (SSID) selected.
- For example, you may see duplicate default router SSIDs of the same name, such as default, Netgear, linksys, WLAN, intel, Belkin54g, or other.
NOTE: WPS users will still have to verify their SSID. Often, WPS automatically generates a random SSID with the last six digits of the AP's MAC address appended to the end of the name. If unsure of this automatically generated network name, access the AP web configuration utility.
- -Incorrect manual entry of the SSID value (spelling, capitalization, spaces) if you selected Manually Enter Network Information (Windows) or Other Wireless Network (Mac).
- For example, if your access point setting for Broadcast SSID or Visibility Status is set to Disable, Hide or Invisible, selection of these configuration options and manual entry of SSID would be be required.
NOTE: Manual configuration would also be required if the router/AP is on a different network subnet or segment of the network.
- -Incorrect selection of security type or mode (None, WEP, WPA, WPA2).
- For example, WPA2 only mode is found under the WPA Advanced Options if authentication is only performed using this security/encryption method.
NOTE: WPS users will still have to verify their security mode. See the router vendor documentation for details.
- -Improper entry of the security network key or passphrase.
- For example, a personal WPA2 passphrase such as "FlocciNauciniHilipilification Is a word2die4" has spaces, numbers and capitalization. Failure to enter this passphrase accurately into the WCU or WSA will prevent the printer from joining the network. NOTE: WPS users will still have to verify their automatically generated network key or passphrase. See the router vendor documentation for details.
- -You have a Draft-N router not running in Mixed b/g/n mode. N-only mode will not work.
- -You have a Draft-N router running in 5Ghz band operation. The Lexmark AIO/printer is a 2.4GHz device.
- -MAC filtering is enabled on the wireless router (AP).
- -DHCP server is turned OFF on the router (AP), or a DHCP timing issue is preventing IP address assignment.
- -The USB cable became detached from the host computer during configuration.
- -A Windows or Macintosh operating system firewall condition or a third-party firewall software application.
- -You are logged into a workplace VPN and your workplace organization has not set up split tunneling to allow the use of two networks at the same time.
- -Internet Service Provider (ISP) restrictions. Contact your ISP.
AP = Access Point; DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (assigns TCP/IP parameters); MAC = Media Access Control (12-digit hexadecimal address on all network devices); SSID = Service Set Identifier (network name); USB = Universal Serial Bus; VPN = Virtual Private Network; WEP = Wired Equivalency Protocol; WPA = Wi-Fi Protected Access; WLAN = Wireless Local Area Netork; WCU = Wireless Configuration Utility; WPS = Wi-Fi Protected Setup; WSA = Wireless Setup Assistant (Macintosh).
Follow the steps below to resolve this issue.
- Click Continue. The WCU or WSA (Macintosh) will tell the wireless print server to search for your network again.
- Notification will be sent via the USB configuration cable to the WCU or WSA to display your network name in the list; select your network again.
- If your network name cannot be found or you are receiving repeated Connection Failed messages:
- Verify that all other wireless clients (computers, devices and other) are communicating on the network.
- Select Manually Enter Network Information (Windows) or Other Wireless Network (Macintosh).
- Gather all required values: SSID, Security Type, and Network Key/Passphrase.
- Give consideration to all of the above probable causes.
NOTE: Occasionally a DHCP timing issue will prevent the printer server (MarkNet adapter) from receiving appropriate TCP/IP parameters.
- Implement the following recommendations as needed:
- - Duplicate identical SSIDs are using the same or a different channel but a differing signal strength.
Recommendation: Change your router's factory default SSID or select the other SSID of the same name and then click Next to proceed to security type and network key selections.
WARNING! If you change your SSID on the router, you will have to reassociate all wireless clients to the access point on the router. See the router's User's Guide for more information.
Signal Strength: If you live in a congested area, the SSID with the stronger radio signal may be coming from a neighboring access point.
- - The correct SSID is selected; however, security type and network key have been incorrectly entered.
Recommendation: Confirm that you are using WEP,WPA or WPA2. Also, access your router's web configuration page to check the network key(s).
IMPORTANT! Spelling, capitalization and spaces in the network key must be accurate in order for the print server to join the network.
WEP WPA/WPA2 Exactly 5 or 13 characters, or exactly 10 to 26 characters using A-F and 0-9 8 - 63 characters long
- - SSID is not listed: Router Setting for Visibility Status, Broadcast SSID, or Closed Network(Mac)
Recommendation: Scroll down the list. It is possible that one or more SSIDs are hidden below the displayed list.
Broadcast SSID: The SSID will not appear if this additional security measure is set to disabled, invisible, or closed on the router. Enable this setting via the router's web configuration page or select Manually Enter Network Information or Other Wireless Network (Mac) and enter the SSID, channel, security type, and network key.
- - MAC filtering is preventing successful configuration.
Recommendation: Disable MAC filtering on your wireless router, or enter the printer's or AIO's MAC address into the list of exceptions via the router's web configuration page.
WARNING! Entering the print server's 12-digit hexadecimal MAC address can either prevent or allow access to the network depending on the router manufacturer's MAC filtering options.
Example (setting location varies by router manufacturer and model):
- - DHCP Server is disabled, preventing the assignment of TCP/IP parameters.
Recommendation: Enable DHCP Server on your wireless router. Without an IP address, the configuration utility (WCU) or setup assistant (WSA) will not be able to create a port successfully.

- Firewalls are interfering with communication
Recommendation: Refer to the firewall topics in the Installation and Networking Table of Contents.
- Virtual Private Network (VPNs)
Recommendation: See your workplace network administrator for further advice on split tunneling.
