Solution

What you will see

You cannot get the paper tray back into the printer.  NOTE: This issue may also be accompanied by repeated 200.04 Paper Jam or Tray 1 Missing messages.

Has the paper pick arm fallen?

Power off the printer and remove the paper tray. Look into the area of the printer where the tray slides in. Has the paper pick arm assembly fallen so that it is now blocking the paper path? See the image below for an example.

  • If the paper pick arm does not appear to have fallen into the path of the paper tray, a metal clip on the paper tray may be loose. Skip ahead to the section entitled 'Check the metal clip on the tray'.

  • If the paper pick arm has fallen into the path of the tray, you will need to get it back into position. Follow the steps below.

NOTE: If at any time you need assistance with the steps below, please contact Lexmark Technical Support. See 'Contacting Lexmark Technical Support' below for details.

1Power off the printer. Open the door/cover on the lower left side of the printer.

2Lift up the pick arm assembly, either from the front or from the side, through the door you just opened.
For larger image, click here.
3Once you have lifted the paper pick arm, look for a black tab/button located near the right-hand side of the pick arm. See the area highlighted in red in the image.

Keeping the pick arm lifted, press up on this button. You should hear a latch click into place.
If you hear the click, let go of the paper pick arm. The paper pick arm should remain raised. Try sliding the paper tray in and out of the printer three times, slowly. Each time you remove the paper tray, look into the printer and make sure the pick arm is still in the raised position.
If the pick arm appears to be fine after you have removed the tray three times, slide the tray into the printer. Close the door/cover on the lower left side of the printer. Power on the printer and try printing again.

If you cannot get the paper pick arm to stay in the raised position, a part on the pick arm or on the printer may be broken. A service action will be required to correct this issue. Contact an authorized service provider in your area or call Lexmark Technical Support for assistance in setting up service. See 'Contacting Lexmark Technical Support' below.

Check the metal clip on the tray

If the paper pick arm assembly is in the raised position but the tray still will not go into the printer, a metal clip on the rear of the tray may be loose. Hold the tray as if to load it back into the printer and you will see the metal clip in question at the rear of the tray, towards the left-hand side. See the highlighted area in the picture below.

Check the metal clip. This clip can rise up and prevent the tray from entering the printer, so make sure it is pressed down fully into the tray. There should not be a gap between the clip and the tray at the bottom of the clip. See the pictures below for examples. The picture on the left shows the clip when it is installed in the tray correctly. The image on the right shows the clip when it is loose and raised in the tray.

  • If the clip is raised, simply push it down into place. Try to reinstall the paper tray now. If the tray goes into the printer successfully, try printing again and confirm that the tray and pick arm assembly are working correctly.

  • If the clip appears to be fine but the tray still cannot be inserted readily into the printer, continue with the suggestions below.

If the paper pick arm and paper tray clip are fine

If the paper pick arm is in the raised position and the clip on the paper tray is in the proper position, follow the suggestions below.

  • Examine the area inside the printer where the tray goes. Confirm that there are no obstructions present that could prevent the paper tray from sliding into the printer.

  • Check the condition of the paper tray, especially the back of the tray or the part that goes in first. Make sure there is no damage to the tray.

  • Remove all paper from the tray and try pushing the tray into the printer once more. If the tray slides completely into the printer with all paper removed, remove the tray, load it about half full of paper, and then try installing it once more. If the tray goes in, power on the printer and try printing again. If the printer prints normally, continue using the printer but make sure not to overload the paper tray from now on.

If you cannot get the paper tray into the printer after going through all of the suggestions above, a part on the tray or on the printer may be broken. A service action will be required to correct the issue. Contact an authorized service provider in your area or call Lexmark Technical Support for assistance in setting up service. See 'Contacting Lexmark Technical Support' below.
