Solution

Overview


A recurring 200.04 Paper Jam message means paper fails to feed any paper from Tray 1 or through the printer. A loose clutch unit on the paper pick arm assembly can cause this issue, or also an unsnapped / dislodged paper deflector. This latter can occur especially after the autocompensator unit (paper pick arm assembly) is replaced on the printer. Please refer to the directions in the table below to help determine which hardware part is causing the issue.

 

 

Troubleshooting


Things to do:
 

  • Check the clutch on the paper pick arm. 
  • Check the position of the paper deflector.

 

  

Check the clutch on the paper pick arm 


Check the clutch on the paper pick arm (autocomp) assembly before replacing any parts. If the cause of the issue is a loose clutch unit, the pick arm assembly does not have to be replaced. Instead, the clutch unit can be lined up and snapped back into place. See the table below for directions.

1 Power off the printer. Remove Tray 1. Open the door/cover on the lower left side of the printer.

2 Using the opening on the printer's left-hand side, look at the paper pick arm assembly. (The paper pick assembly is highlighted in the image.)

3 Try rotating the pick rollers in the direction indicated in the image. Note: This is the 'feed' direction; i.e., the direction in which the rollers turn when feeding paper from the tray.

If the clutch unit is properly connected, the pick rollers should spin easily when rotated in the 'feed' direction. If the rollers do not spin easily when rotated in this feed direction, the clutch and coupler units on the feed roller shaft may be disconnected. Proceed to Step 4 below.
If the pick rollers spin freely when turned in the feed direction but the printer still does not feed paper, try printing with just a few sheets of plain copy paper loaded in the paper tray. Confirm that the paper is properly loaded in the tray. If the problem continues, a gear on the pick arm assembly may be damaged. This will require a service action on the printer. Replace the pick arm assembly.
Note: The pick rollers should NOT turn freely when rotated in the opposite direction to the 'feed' direction. If the feed rollers rotate freely in this opposite direction, a gear on the pick arm assembly is broken. Replace the pick arm assembly.

Look closely at the pick arm assembly. Check the clutch unit (A). Make sure it is snapped completely into the coupler unit (B).


See the images below for examples. The left image shows what the clutch and coupler units should look like when properly connected. In the right-hand image, the clutch and the coupler units have become separated. Notice the gap between them (highlighted by the arrow).

Another thing to look for: confirm that the snap feature on the pick roller shaft is visible. This also indicates whether the shaft and clutch assembly are fully engaged.

  • If the coupler and clutch units are not connected, continue with Step 5 below.
     
     
  • If the coupler and clutch units are connected completely but the feed rollers do not spin freely when rotated in the 'feed' direction, a part on the pick arm assembly may be damaged or stuck. Replace the pick arm assembly.

5 Rotate the white part of the clutch unit until it lines up correctly with the coupler unit. Once you achieve this alignment, use one hand to support the pick arm assembly and hold it in place. Use the other hand to push the right side of the feed roller shaft to the left (i.e., when looking at the pick arm assembly from the front of the printer, you will be pushing the feed roller shaft towards the rear of the printer.)
If this is done correctly, you should hear the pick arm shaft and clutch click into place.

IMPORTANT! Use caution when attempting this step. Some force is required to push the clutch unit and the right side of the pick roller arm back into place. However, you must have the clutch unit correctly lined up with the coupler and you must support the main black plastic pick arm. Failure to do so can result in too much force being applied to the main pick arm. If that occurs, the plastic cover on the main pick arm can break and the pick arm assembly will need to be replaced.

6 If you are able to snap the clutch unit back into place, try turning the pick rollers again in the 'feed' direction. If the feed rollers now turn freely, release the pick arm and confirm that it remains in the 'raised' position. If it does, close the lower-left cover and reinstall the paper tray. Power on the printer and try printing again.
If the printer still fails to feed the paper properly, try printing with just a few sheets of plain copy paper loaded in the paper tray. Confirm that the paper is properly loaded in the tray. If the problem continues, a gear on the pick arm assembly may be damaged. This will require a service action on the printer to replace the pick arm assembly.

Check the position of the paper deflector


To ensure that the paper deflector is properly installed, check the three components discussed below.

Make sure the front tab of the paper deflector is snapped into the correct position. (See the images below for examples.) The left-hand image shows the paper deflector in the correct position, while the right-hand image shows the paper deflector in an incorrect position.

Make sure the rear post of the paper deflector is snapped into the correct position. (See the images below for guidance.) The left-hand image shows the paper deflector in the correct position, while the right-hand image shows the paper deflector in an incorrect position. If the rear mounting post is not snapped in place properly, the leading edge of the paper will not make it to the first roller on the reference edge.
