What the error means

The 936-939 Service Paper Option Error indicates that the printer has detected a problem with one of the paper/media input sources.

936 Service Paper Option indicates an issue with Tray 1.
937 Service Paper Option indicates an issue with Tray 2.
938 Service Paper Option indicates an issue with Tray 3.
939 Service Paper Option indicates an issue with Tray 4.

What to do

This error normally requires a service call. However, certain rare occurrences, such as a power fluctuation or a stray static discharge in the vicinity of the printer, can cause a false 936-939 Service Paper Option Error message to appear. In such cases, the error is only temporary and can be easily resolved without service. Follow the steps in the table to check.

Power the printer off, wait ten seconds, and then power the printer back on.

Yes:  Continue to step 2.
No:  Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.

If possible, connect the printer's power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet.  In rare instances, a surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can generate false error messages.

Yes: Continue to step 3.
No: Print a test page.  If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.

Remove the paper tray(s) and check behind them for any loose media.  Ensure that any additional trays that are installed are trays for the C920 and not for another Lexmark printer (such as the C910 or C912).  After removing any loose media, reinstall the tray and attempt a print job.
Did the error message return?

Yes: Continue to 'Contacting Lexmark'.
No: Print a test page.  If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.
