Error: " 900 "; Error: " 900 Service RIP Software "; 900.xx Errors; Flashing lights; Error light on

Solution

What This Error Means

A 900 Service RIP Software error normally indicates a communication problem with the network or software. However, certain parts on the printer can also cause this error to appear.

Clearing the Error

StepAction
1If the printer is currently displaying a 900 Service RIP Software error, power off the printer.  Leave it powered off for 10 seconds or more to clear its memory.
2While the printer is off, clear any pending print jobs from the computer or the network queue. This will prevent any corrupted print jobs from being re-sent to the printer when it is powered back on.
  3
Power the printer back on. If it goes to the Ready status, try printing again. If the error does not return, continue using the printer.
  4
If the 900 Service RIP Software error returns when the printer is powered up or when you try to print, there is a problem with the printer, with a communication cable, or with the print job itself. Follow the directions below to check each of these components.

  • If the error appears every time you power on the printer, regardless of whether you send a print job or not, the most likely source of the problem is the printer or an option installed on the printer. See 'Testing the Printer Hardware' below for more detailed information.

  • If the error appears only when you send a print job to the printer, the most likely source of the problem is the computer, a setting on the printer, or one of the communication cables. See 'Testing the Software' below for more detailed information.
NOTE: If a Watchdog or 900 Watchdog error appears, the printer is not receiving enough resources from its internal processor. Click here to read more about this issue and for suggestions on how to correct it.

Testing the Printer Hardware

StepAction
  1Power off the printer.
  2
Disconnect all communication cables (i.e. the parallel, Ethernet, and USB cables). The only cable that should be connected to the printer at this time is the power cord.
  3
Power the printer back on.  If the 900 error returns when the printer is powered back on, proceed to Step 5 below.
  4
If the 900 error does not appear on the printer screen, use the printer operator panel to print a menu settings page.

  • If your printer is an E250d or E250dnclick here for directions on printing a menu settings page.

  • If your printer is an E350d or E352dnclick here for directions on printing a menu settings page.

  • If your printer is an E450dnclick here for directions on printing a menu settings page.

If the menu settings page prints out as expected, the likely source of the problem is the computer, a setting on the printer, or one of the communication cables. Refer to 'Testing the Software' below.
  5
If the 900 error occurs on power-up or when the menu settings page is being printed, there is probably an issue with either the printer or an option installed on the printer. Remove any and all installed options from the printer. This would include an optional paper tray, any extra memory, and any optional network cards. NOTE: If your printer does not have any options installed, a part on the printer may require service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for assistance. See the contact information at the bottom of this document.
StepAction
  1Power off the printer.
  2Remove all installed options.
3When all of the options have been removed, power the printer back on.
4If the 900 error persists, the printer will probably require service. For more information, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.
5If the error does not appear after you have removed all the options, try printing an internal menu settings page again. If printing the menu settings page causes the 900 error to return, the printer will probably require service.
6If the menu settings page prints as expected, power off the printer and begin reinstalling the removed options one at a time.
7Each time you install an option, power on the printer and print a menu settings page.
8If the page prints as expected, power off the printer and install another option.
If the 900 error returns after one particular option is installed, power off the printer and remove the last option you installed. That option will probably need to be replaced. Please contact the outlet where you purchased the option or Lexmark Technical Support for information on having it replaced.
9Repeat steps 1 - 7 until you have reinstalled all of the removed options onto the printer.
If you can reinstall all of the options without the 900 error returning, continue using the printer. One of the options may have been loose.
  6
If the 900 error continues, a part on the printer may require service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for further assistance. See the contact information at the bottom of this document.

Testing the Software

If the source of the 900 RIP Software error appears to be the computer, the network, or a cable, do the following:
StepAction
1Try sending a different print job to the printer. If the error occurs only when you send a particular print job or when you print using a particular program, there may be a settings conflict in the software. Please contact your next level of internal network/software support for assistance. If that option is not available, you may also contact Lexmark Technical Support. See the contact information at the end of this document.
2If multiple computers on a network use this printer, check to see if the error occurs from only one particular computer or station.
If you find that it does, check the driver settings on that particular computer. For assistance with this, please contact your internal network/software helpdesk or Lexmark Technical Support.
3If the 900 error is not dependent on a particular print job, program, or computer/station, one of the communication cables may be bad. Try another cable if you have an extra one available.
4If the printer is attached to a network, try plugging the printer/cable into another network port/drop point. For assistance with this, please contact your internal network/software helpdesk or Lexmark Technical Support.
  5
Finally, there are three settings on the printer that can cause this error to occur if they are not correct: NPA mode, PCL Smartswitch, and PS Smartswitch.  All three of these settings exist for each port present on the printer (i.e. standard parallel, standard USB, standard network, etc.).

  • The NPA Mode setting should be AUTO.

  • The PCL and PS Smartswitch settings should be ON.

To see what the printer is currently set to, use the printer operator panel to print a menu settings page.

  • If your printer is an E250d or E250dnclick here for directions on printing a menu settings page.

  • If your printer is an E350d or E352dnclick here for directions on printing a menu settings page.

  • If your printer is an E450dnclick here for directions on printing a menu settings page.

Scan the printout for the current NPA mode, PCL Smartswitch, and PS Smartswitch settings. If any of the settings are not as listed here, select the setting indicated instead. Try printing again. NOTE: For more information on these settings, please refer to the printer's User's Guide.
6If the error continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support for further assistance. See the contact information at the end of this document.

Contacting Lexmark

If none of the above suggestions resolve the issue, you may contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.
When calling Lexmark Technical Support for service, please be prepared to describe the problem you are experiencing or the error message on the display. You will also need to provide your printer's model type and serial number. This information can be found on a label on the inside of the front cover of the printer.
Please call from near the printer in case the technician asks you to perform a task involving the printer.
