MVP 11.0: Invalid EHLO Header Format when MarkVision Messenger is used with SMTP Server

Document ID:SO3553

  Properties

Problem

MVP sends invalid EHLO header to SMTP host; MVP sends invalid HELO header to SMTP host; MVP sends SMTP hostname in EHLO header; MVP sends SMTP hostname in HELO header; Messenger failing; Messenger fails to connect to SMTP server

Environment

MarkVision Professional (MVP) 11.0; MarkVision Messenger (MVP) 11.0

Solution

Problem Description

MVP's Messenger service is using _mvpServer in the originating EHLO (HELO) command header when negotiating a handshake with the SMTP server.  Messenger appears to be using the SMTP server hostname (_mvpServer) instead of MVP's server hostname.

Proper Handshake Values

The MVP messenger command header values used during the initial handshake with the SMTP server should look like this:  EHLO <Hostname*> <FQDN**>
(i.e. EHLO Moi.dhcp.lexmark.com)
*    computer name for MVP server (Moi)
**  fully qualified domain name for the computer running MVP server (dhcp.lexmark.com)

Resolution

The plug-in MessengerHelo v 1.2 changes the MVP behavior to obtain the line: EHLO

    1. Download the file ENUS24501_MessengerHelo_1_2.zip and unzip it.

    2. Install the plug-in on your MVP server.  (For information on how to install MVP plug-ins, click here.)

    3. Reboot your MVP server. (Click here for instructions.)
