Solution

If the printer jams, the appropriate jam message will be displayed on the printer operator panel.  Select Show areas on the operator panel to view images that will help you clear the jam.

To resolve the paper jam messages, you must first clear the entire paper path and then press the Select button to clear the message and resume printing.
To clear the paper jam:

  1. Is the paper part of the way out the top of the printer when it jams?
If so, slowly pull the paper straight out. If there is resistance and the paper does not move immediately when you pull, stop pulling and continue with step 2.

  2. Open the rear door. The door opens and drops down towards you, giving you better access to the paper.

  3. Remove the jammed media.

  4. Close the rear door. IMPORTANT! Make sure the rear door is completely closed. If the door is not completely closed, it will cause the paper to jam.
  5. Press the Select (check mark) button to continue printing.

  6. If the printer continues to jam paper, there are a few more things you can try.

    • Open up the rear exit door of the printer and look into it.

      • Make sure there are no small pieces of paper blocking the path.

      • Make sure there isn't an actual broken part on the fuser that could be causing this jam.

      • Print one page and leave the rear exit door open. See if you can look into the back of the printer and determine what might be causing the jam to occur.

      • If the paper comes out easily when the rear exit door is open, look at the guides on the exit door and at the top set of feed rollers on the back. Make sure nothing appears loose or broken.

      • If the paper feeds out the back as designed but jams up when you try to feed it out the top of the printer, you may have a loose guide at the top of the printer in the back. Try removing the top rear cover. (This is the cover at the back of the printer that you remove to install an optional output expander.)  Then try printing again with the rear door closed and the top cover off.

      • If paper shoots straight up and out the top of the printer instead of going out towards the front, the top deflector guide is loose. There is a spring that is supposed to hold it in position. Looking from the back of the printer, look down towards the right-hand side of the guide. See if you can find and reattach the spring. If you can, try printing again.

    • If you cannot find any paper jammed in the printer but continue to receive the 202.xx Paper Jam error, the printer may have a broken or stuck exit sensor flag. The exit sensor is on the back of the fuser. Do the following:

      1. Open the rear door of the printer.

      2. Look for any small black pieces of plastic sitting loose inside.

      3. If you find any, remove them and save them.

      4. Try printing again.

      5. If the paper jam continues, contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local service provider. You will probably require the help of a technician to fix the problem.

    • Are you using a duplex unit that has been installed to allow you to print on both sides of the paper?

      1. If you are, try printing single-sided pages. If those pages come out properly, the duplex unit may be the source of the problem.

      2. Open the rear door of the duplex option and remove the front access tray of the duplex option. Make sure there are no sheets of paper jammed in the duplex unit.

      3. If nothing appears to be jammed in the duplex option, power off the printer and try reseating the duplex unit. This might realign the duplex tray with the printer and make the printer work again.

      4. If the jamming continues but only when you are printing on both front and back of the page, the duplex option will probably need to be replaced. If your duplex option is still under warranty, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or your warranty service provider to get it replaced.

    • Are you printing on regular plain bond copy paper?

      • If not, try printing again with plain copy paper. This will eliminate special media as part of the cause of the jamming, even if the special media has worked in the past.
Certain specialty papers, letterhead stock, label stock, and card stock can promote jamming in the fuser unit.  For more information on this, please refer to the Card Stock and Label Guide.
NOTE: By carefully selecting print media and loading it properly, you should be able to avoid most paper jams.

If you go through all of the above checks and  the printer continues to jam or if you cannot find any jammed sheet of paper, the printer may require service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local service provider.

IMPORTANT!
If your 202 Paper Jam error message ends in .3x, .4x, or.5x, the fuser unit has exceeded its expected life and you will need to have the maintenance kit replaced.  For more information, please contact Lexmark Technical Support
or an authorized servicer in your area.
