Thin (Single Pel) Lines Are Extremely Light or Not Printing; Adjustment to 'Enhance Fine Lines' and 'Pixel Boost' Driver Setting

Problem

Thin lines are not printed; Thin (single-pel) lines are extremely light or not printed at all; Thin lines are not printed with PostScript, PCL5 and PCL XL drivers

Environment

Printer may not properly print single-pel (ISO pel) lines due to the strokewidth of the line.

Solution

What you will see

A printed graphic (chart, spreadsheet, image) is missing fine lines or lines are barely visible.  

 

Suggested Remedy

 

Turn ON the enhance fine lines setting or adjust the pixel boost settings.

NOTE: This driver setting location is the same regardless of installed printer driver, however, certain driver revisions may not provide this capability.

Enhance fine lines

  1. Open the Printers and Faxes window.
  2. Right-click on the printer object.
  3. Click on Printing Preferences
  4. Click on the driver's Print Quality tab.
  5. Click on More Print Quality Options
  6. Place a checkmark next to Enhance fine lines.
  7. Click on OK.
  8. Click on Apply.

Pixel boost

  1. Open the Printers and Faxes window.
  2. Right-click on the printer object.
  3. Click on Printing Preferences
  4. Click on the driver's Print Quality tab.
  5. Click on More Print Quality Options
  6. Place a checkmark next to Pixel boost.
  7. Click on OK.
  8. Click on Apply.

 

Setting options explained

Pixel Boost
  • Use printer settings - The printer driver applies this setting as needed
  • Off - This setting is not used for the print job
  • Fonts - The printer driver applies this setting only to the text within the print job
  • Horizontally - Darkens horizontal lines of text and images within the print job.
  • Vertically - Darkens vertical lines of text and images.
  • Both directions - Darkens both horizontal and vertical lines
Enhance fine lines
  • Use printer settings - The printer applies this setting as needed
  • On - This setting is used for the print job
  • Off - This setting is not used for the print job
