Solution

Who's this for?

Anyone that needs to recover a device after downgrading or upgrading firmware code to an unacceptable level.

Click Properties near the top of this article for a list of supported devices.

NOTE: Lexmark does not recommend or officially support downgrading firmware levels on your device. If you do downgrade firmware to a previous version, make sure that you have fully read the latest firmware release notes for additional instructions or precautions.

What can happen?

One example:

Your device's starting firmware code level is... And, you attempt to downgrade to... Which results in...
EC5.0 (Base* LW50.xx.P543) EC4.0/4.05 (LW40.xx.P436/.P439) 900 service error
EC4.1 (LW41.xx.P454) Success
Code earlier than EC4.0/EC4.05

This failure was caused by major code changes between EC4.0, 4.05 (LW40) and EC5 (LW50). To counter this error, you should have first downgraded to EC4.1.

* Find the current value listed on the Printer Menus settings page under Device Information.

 Non-touch screen device recovery

For this example, the starting EC5.0 firmware code level is needed to recover this device.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold down 2, 7 and 8 (RCV) while turning the device on again.
  3. Release the buttons when the display panel starts showing activity.
  4. The display panel will say USB Recovery. If not, repeat the Steps 1-3.
  5. Connect the device via USB cable to a computer.
  6. Send the LW50.xx.P543.fls file to the printer using the USB flash utility. Click here for additional USB flash utility information.

The device will reboot automatically and return to a Ready state.

 Touch screen device recovery

This procedure does not require the USB thumb drive.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold down 7 and 8 (RT) while turning the device back on.
  3. Release the buttons when the display panel starts showing activity.

The panel will indicate that it is booting using LW50.xx.P543

 DLE Users

A similar irrecoverable error will occur if you install a Download Emulator (DLE) option card equipped with LW40.xx.Pxx code into a printer with LW50.xx.P5xx firmware code.

To recover from this situation, you can choose from any of the following options:

Step  Action
1

Remove DLE option card:

  • Switch off the printer.
  • Remove the DLE option card.
  • Turn on the device to return it to a Ready state.
  • Contact Lexmark Technical Support to obtain compatible firmware and additional update instructions.

2

Bypass DLE option card on boot:

  • Switch off the printer.
  • Press and hold Home button while switching the printer on.
  • Contact Lexmark Technical Support to obtain compatible firmware and additional update instructions.

NOTE: Prescribe, PrintCryption, and Forms/Bar Code cards are examples of downloadable language emulators. DLEs require complimentary base code in order to function.
