This article describes how to turn on and initiate a fax from your computer.

The following numbered procedures will be described as steps below.

  1. Turn on Enable Fax.
  2. Optional FAX printer object set up procedure.
  3. Send a Print Job.

 

 

Procedure requirements

Before proceeding with the below steps, confirm the following:

  • The MFP has Driver to Fax turned On. Click here for more information.
  • The PS Driver has the FAX option installed. Click here for more information.

  

 

Step 1: How to Enable Fax (Microsoft ™ Windows XP example)

  1. Open PRINTERS and FAXES.
  2. Right-click on the Printer Object.
  3. Click on PROPERTIES.
  4. Click on the FAX tab.
  5. Place a check mark in the check box next to ENABLE FAX.
  6. Click APPLY.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Jump to Step 3 if you do not want to create a FAX PRINTER OBJECT.

Step 2: How to setup a Secondary (Fax) Printer Object (Optional)


This procedure prevents the need to disable and re-enable fax every time you need to send a fax from the computer.

 

  1. Open PRINTERS and FAXES.
  2. Click on ADD PRINTER.
  3. "Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard" appears, click NEXT.
  4. Leave LOCAL PRINTER selected for the type of printer to add, then click NEXT.
  5. Next to "Use the following port", click the down-arrow and select the the proper local or network printer port.
  6. Click NEXT
  7. "Install Printer Software" appears; be sure to select Lexmark or Lexmark PS and highlight your model. 
  8. Click NEXT.
  9. Select "Replace existing driver" and click NEXT.
  10. In the Name your Printer window, replace the default name to a name that indicates a fax; e.g., Lexmark Lexmark X945 Fax Only. Click here for illustration.
  11. Select NO for Print Sharing, and click NEXT. 
  12. Select NO for Print a Test Page, and click NEXT.
  13. Click FINISH.
  14. See instructions above for how to ENABLE FAX for your new FAX PRINTER OBJECT.

Step 3: Send a Print Job

 

  1. Select File.
  2. Select Print.
  3. If you have created a separate FAX PRINTER OBJECT, select it; otherwise, select the printer as normal.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Fill in the remaining fax parameters: fax number, group fax, phone book selections, cover page, and more.
  6. Click OK.
