This wireless environment involves a direct computer-to-printer connection. It does not require the use of an access point or wireless router serving as an access point. 

1. Make sure the printer is turned ON () and that the WiFi indicator light on the printer is ON .
   The WiFi connection light comes ON after the printer's WiFi card has finished initializing.
   NOTE:  If the WiFi indicator light is , press  to take the printer out of power saver mode. 
   


2. Print the network settings page and verify the printer's factory default WiFi settings.  Click here for instructions. 


• Settings of concern:  


• Status - Not Connected


• SSID - print server ######


• Address - 0.0.0.0


• Netmask - 255.255.255.0


• Gateway - 0.0.0.0


• UAA (MAC address) - 12-digit hexadecimal value


• BSS Type - Ad hoc


• If your settings do not resemble the above, it is recommended that you reset the printer. Click here for instructions. 
   


3. Lastly, verify that the AirPort is turned ON.  HINT: Click on the AirPort status icon.

1	Click on the AirPort status icon, and then click print server ###### (i.e., the SSID value on your network settings page).  NOTE:  If the status icon is not present, you can click on the Internet Connect icon ( ) and then the  AirPort icon to perform this procedure.   Be patient!  Your Mac may not immediately find the printer's Service Set Identifier (SSID). It may take a couple of minutes depending on interference, hardware performance, distance to printer, and wireless network traffic affecting bandwidth or throughput.  Suggestions: Turn AirPort OFF and ON. Turn the printer OFF and ON. Verify that other wireless devices are being seen by the AirPort wireless adapter.	Image
2 (Observation)	The AirPort status icon will change to reflect a direct connection between two wireless devices (computer-to-computer, computer-to-printer, and so on). NOTE:  The image in the middle of the icon (see illustration to the right) is a computer.  This direct connection is commonly referred to as 'ad-hoc mode'.	(Ad-hoc mode)
3	Insert the supplied driver CD and click 3500-4500 Series Installer.
4	Click Install.
5	The driver software will lead you through a series of installation subprocesses.  You will need to click Continue several times.	Larger view
6	Before the installation process starts, you may be required to enter the administrator password. This is an Apple security feature that allows users to prevent unwanted software installation and changes to system settings.    NOTE:  This prompt may appear a second time just prior to the Install process. 7	The Lexmark 3500-4500 Series Setup Assistant will now be displayed with another set of installation subprocesses.  Click Continue.	Image
8	During the Printer Configuration process, you will be required to click on the appropriate printer. HINT: The correct printer will display the end portion of the printer's UAA (MAC) address.  See 'Network settings page'. Suggestion:  Make note of the IP address and verify that it matches the IP address on the network settings page.  See 'Network settings page'. Troubleshooting:  Depending on the speed of your Mac, this configuration process may take a moment. Also, slower Macs may display this screen over the top of the last set of installation processes and prevent a successful search.  Click  here  for more information.	Image
9	Enter a Scan-to-PC identification name or keep the default value.  This is necessary for  network or local scanback functionality to the computer. Optional:  A four-digit PIN provides additional security preventing unauthorized access.	Image
10	Printer Configuration will now take place.  NOTE:  During this process, printer port creation occurs and a printer object will populate the Print Center.	Image
11	Optional:  After registering the product, click Print a test page to confirm successful installation, communication, and port creation.	Image
12	Optional:  Click the Print Center icon to view the 3500-4500 series printer listed with its affiliated MAC address. You can also open the printer's embedded web server (ex: http://<printer's_IP _ address>, where <printer's_IP_address> is the address listed on the printer's network settings page after successful installation).
