This article describes how to install the universal printer driver (UPD) in a Microsoft Windows environment. 

In the following order:

1. Download the self-extracting universal driver file.


2. Double-click on the file name to extract the driver files to a destination directory/path/folder.  NOTE: You can change this directory path if necessary.


3. Make a note of this destination directory (e.g. C:/drivers/etc).


4. Close the Add Printer Wizard following the extraction process; you will be installing the printer through the Found New Hardware Wizard.


5. Connect the printer to the computer using a USB or parallel cable.


6. Turn the printer ON.

   The Found New Hardware Wizard will open; follow the installation steps for your operating system version below. NOTE:  Failure to install the printer through the Found New Hardware Wizard will result in the creation of two printer objects.

Windows Vista:

Step	Action	Illustration (click Image)
1	After logging into Windows Vista, observe the Found New Hardware Wizard and select Locate and install driver software (recommended).	Image
2	The next screen requests permission to search for a driver online.  Since you have already downloaded the driver to a local directory, select Don't Search Online.	Image
3	Select I don't have the disc.  Show me other options.	Image
4	Select Browse to locate the directory containing the extracted driver files, or directly type the directory path  (e.g. C:\drivers) in the dialog box, and select Next.	Image
5	A list of drivers found in the specified directory will now appear; select the appropriate driver, and select Next.	Image
6	Observe the progress bar as the installation of the driver takes place.	Image
7	Observe an installation successful message.	Image

Windows XP:

Step	Action	Illustration (click Image)
1	When Found New Hardware Wizard appears, select No, not this time, and click Next.	Image
2	Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and click Next.	Image
3	Select Don't search.  I will choose the driver to install, and click Next.	Image
4	Under Common Hardware Types:, select Printers and click Next.	Image
5	Click Have Disk.	Image
6	Click Browse to locate the directory containing the extracted driver files (universal driver  .inf file).	Image
7	Click on the .inf file so it populates the dialog box next to File name:, and click Open.	Image
8	An Install From Disk window will appear. Click OK.	Image
9	Select Lexmark Universal and click Next.	Image
10	Click Yes to the Update Warning.	Image
11	Click Finish.	Image

Windows 2000: 

Step	Action	Illustration (click  Image)
1	When Found New Hardware Wizard appears, select Next.	Image
2	Select Display a list of known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and click Next.	Image
3	Select Printers from the list of Hardware types:, and click Next.	Image
4	Add Print Wizard now appears, select Have Disk...	Image
5	Install From Disk appears. Select Browse to locate the directory of the extracted universal driver files (universal driver .inf file).	Image
6	Once the directory is located, click on the .inf file so that it populates the dialog box next to File name:, and click Open.	Image
7	Install From Disk appears again with the directory of the driver listed under Copy manufacturer's files from:. Click OK.	Image
8	Click on Lexmark Universal to highlight it, and click Next.	Image
9	Observe the Update Driver Warning, and click Yes.	Image
10	Click Next to the Start Device Driver Installation notification.	Image
11	Observe the transfer of driver installation files.	Image
12	Click Finish to finalize the installation and close the Wizard.	Image
