Infrastructure Mode

This wireless environment involves the use of an AirPort base station, access point, or wireless router serving as an access point.

Before you begin

  • Make sure the printer is turned ON  and that the WiFi indicator light on the printer is ON .
NOTE:  The WiFi connection light comes ON after the printer's WiFi card has finished initializing.
HINT:  If the WiFi indicator light is OFF and the power button light strobes ,  the printer has entered Power Save mode.  Press the power button and wait for the WiFi indicator light to come back on.

  • Print the network settings page and verify your printer's network settings are at their factory defaults.  Click  here  for instructions.
Check the following factory default settings:

  • Status - Not Connected

  • UAA (MAC address ) -  printer-unique 12-digit hexadecimal value, e.g. 00200002CD60

  • TCP/IP - Active (ON)

  • Enable DHCP - ON

  • Address - 0.0.0.0

  • Netmask - 255.255.255.0

  • Gateway - 0.0.0.0

  • BSS Type - Ad hoc

  • SSID - print server (last 6 alphanumeric digits of MAC address), e.g. print server02CD60

If your settings do not resemble the above, reset the printer using these instructions.

  • Obtain your wireless router configuration (security) settings and write them down.  Click here for sample instructions.
NOTE:  Refer to your wireless router/access point documentation for further assistance.

  • For this example, a D-Link router was used with the values below. (Click here for the wireless router screen images of these values.)

Basic Wireless Values

  • BSS Type - Mixed or Infrastructure

  • Network Name (SSID) - macdaddy3

  • Broadcast Enabled

    Wireless Security*

      • Security Mode - WPA Personal (PSK-TKIP)

      • WPA Algorithms - AES

      • WPA shared key (Network key or Security key) - Hookooekoo2006 (Case sensitive!)

    * Security settings are personal choices based on desired security level and network environment.  Follow the instructions provided by the router/access point manufacturer to determine appropriate settings.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  SSID and Security key values are case-sensitive.  Improper entry of these values will result in configuration failure of the printer's network adapter, and prevent the printer from communicating with the access point.

    • Lastly, verify that the computer is communicating over the network and communicating with the access point.  See Related Articles below if necessary.

    Observation

The airport status icon appearance will change to reflect a direct connection between two wireless devices (computer-to-computer, computer-to-printer etc.)
NOTE:  The image in the middle of the icon
() is a computer . This direct connection is commonly referred to as 'ad-hoc mode'.  This setting will be changed back to infrastructure mode later in the procedure.
