How to clear the print queue; How to clear print jobs; How to stop printing; How to open the print queue; Microsoft Windows Vista

The print queue allows you to pause printing, resume printing, restart printing, and cancel all or individual print documents.  This article will focus on the last of these options and describe how you can delete, or cancel, all or particular print jobs.

How to open the Windows Vista print queue

Step Action
1Click on the Windows logo start button.
2Click on Control Panel on the right-hand side of the start menu contents.
  3Click on Hardware and Sound.
4Click on Printers to open the folder containing your installed printer(s).
5Double-click on your printer object (i.e. picture icon with the printer description/name).
This is the print queue.  Any pending, or currently printing print jobs will be listed here.

Deleting print jobs from the print queue

Use steps 1-5 in the table above to access the print queue.
Delete all print jobs
  •  Click on Printer in the toolbar and then click on Cancel All Documents,
  •  Right-click in the print queue and  select Cancel All Documents from the pop-up menu.

Delete individual print jobs

  1. Highlight the individual job in the print queue by clicking on it.

  2. Right-click on the highlighted job and select Cancel from the pop-up menu.

IMPORTANT! If a job is stuck in the print queue and cannot be deleted or canceled using the above steps, there may be an issue with the printer spooler that controls the printing options in Windows.  If you observe this symptom, it may be necessary to stop and restart the print spooler. Click here for an article explaining how to start and stop the print spooler in Windows Vista.  After performing this procedure, you can try again to delete or cancel any remaining jobs in the print queue.
