When the new Wireless Print Adapter is shipped, the latest software and firmware are always installed on it. As bugs are identified and fixed over time, the software or firmware of the adapter may need to be upgraded. This document details the steps for performing the software and firmware upgrades. Important!
You should read this document in its entirety before you attempt an update. If the procedure is not followed carefully, the device could be rendered inoperable without possibility of recovery.To update the firmware on the 802.11b Wireless Print Adapter:
- Power on your Wireless Print Adapter and connect it directly to a computer. The computer must install a TFTP client. (You may also choose to connect the computer wirelessly to the Adapter. The procedure for upgrading the firmware or software remains the same.)
- Checksum verification:
Along with each upgrade release, a chksum.exe is provided. This program is used to verify whether the software or firmware has been corrupted during the delivery. To verify whether a file has been corrupted or not, enter the following command on the computer:
where is the file to be verified and is a number. (A checksum number will be provided along with the upgrade software or firmware release.) A verify chksum succeeds message displays after a successful verification; otherwise, you will see a verify chksum failed message. If your verification failed, please contact us immediately to obtain a new upgrade file. Important: Do not upgrade if the verification test failed! Upgrading without verification may result in damage to the Wireless Print Adapter.
- Upgrade the software:
The Wireless Print Adapter has an embedded TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server, and software upgrading can be accomplished with the following TFTP command:
tftp ?i put /
where tftp is the command for activating a tftp session; ?i switch specifies binary file transfer; is the dotted decimal format of the Wireless Print Adapter's IP address; and is the new software image (firmware) used to upgrade the adapter. The / character specifies that the will be placed in the root directory of the adapter file system. For instance, a typical command would look like this:
tftp ?i 169.254.98.200 put wpa_2.0.0.bin /
When you run the above command, you should see a Transfer successful message. Note: Since the software upgrade may or may not change the device's IP address, it is important to know what the new IP address of the device is going to be after the upgrading. This information should be provided with each release of the upgrade software.
- Upgrade the firmware:
Although a single step can be used to upgrade the software, two steps must be followed in order to upgrade the firmware in the Wireless Print Adapter. The first step is to upgrade the firmware only, while the second is to re-install the software in the device. Because the first step modifies the existing software in the device, you must re-install the software after upgrading the firmware.
- Firmware-only upgrading:
Performing a firmware-only upgrade can also be accomplished with a TFTP command:
tftp ?i put /
where is only used to upgrade the adapter firmware. It does not contain the regular software. For instance, a typical command will look like this:
tftp ?i 169.254.98.200 put wpa_firm_2.0.0.bin /
After you run the above command, you should see a Transfer successful message. In addition, the green light will flash a few times in a looping fashion. You should then be able to ping the device again with the IP address provided.
- Software re-installation:
To re-install the software in the device, please follow the instructions under 'Upgrade the software' above. In this context, reinstalling the software and upgrading the software are the same. Note: Since the firmware upgrade (software reinstallation) may or may not change the device's IP address, it is important to know what the new IP address of the device is going to be after the upgrading. This information should be provided with each release of the upgrading firmware.
