Overview

This article provides a quick summary of how to the create a Print Output file (.prn).

 

Audience

You may need to generate a print file for escalation purposes or for testing driver and communication issues. 

 

Via Application 

  1. In the application you are printing from, click on File, Print.
  2. Select the Print to file option, then click OK. A Print to File screen will then appear.
  3. In the Save in: box, select the location you want to save the file to, (e.g. your desktop), give it a name, and click OK.
    NOTE: The steps above are based on Microsoft Word, but similar steps can be used in other applications.

 

 

Via Printer Driver

  1. Click on Start.
  2. Click Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes, or click on Devices and Printers.
  3. Right-click on printer driver (printer object).
  4. Click on Printer Properties or Properties from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click on the Ports tab.
  6. Scroll down the list and look for the Print to File option.
  7. Select it.
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Initiate a print job from the application and save the .prn file.

 

 

What to do next

If... Then...
Submitting the .prn for escalation purposes.. You are done. Include the .prn file with all other escalation materials requested by your technical support representative.
Testing a driver or communication issue...

Send the file to the printer using various methods based on printer connection method.

Connection... Then...
USB cable Send the file to the printer using a piece of software such as the local printer setup utility (LPSU).
Network connection

Send the file to the printer using FTP, or in some instances you can send the file from the printer's embedded Web server.

 

 

 

FTP Example

 

  1. From a command prompt, open an FTP session to the adapter by typing ftp TCP/IP_address, where TCP/IP is the address of the printer, MFP, or print server.
  2. Log in to the FTP server with a user name. (Pressing ENTER will allow an anonymous login.)

IMPORTANT! If necessary, type cd.. to go to the root directory. Otherwise, make sure the listed directory is in the same location as the file.
NOTE: This can also be performed prior to Step 1.

  1. Type bin and press ENTER to switch to binary transfer.
  2. Type put c:path filename to transfer your file to the adapter so that it will be printed.
  3. Type bye to close the FTP session.
