Printer Will Not Function After Upgrading to Windows 8

If near the completion of your Windows 8 upgrade, you see... Or, when you try to print, you see... Then...

"Installing Windows will affect these devices or applications"

  • Lexmark Series Printer
  • "There was problem connecting to the printer"
  • "Page failed to print"
See Suggested Remedy below. 

 

During the Windows 8 Update

"Installing Windows will affect these devices or applications."

The compatibility report that recommends you close Windows Setup and uninstall the necessary applications (drivers). 

 

After the Windows 8 Update

  • "There was problem connecting to the printer. Make sure it is connected and try again."

Observed when attempting to print from a New Windows 8 style application.

  • "Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance?"


Observed when attempting to print a test page from Printer Properties.

Print Troubleshooter Note: Do not say Yes, as it will not resolve your problem.  

 

Suggested Remedy 

 

 

To regain the ability to print:

  1. Open your Desktop.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Open (View) Devices and Printers under Hardware and Sound.
  4. Locate your printer object.
  5. Right-click on the Lexmark Printer Object and choose “Remove Device”.
  6. Uninstall the Lexmark Series Printer from either the Lexmark Uninstaller or Control Panel > Programs (Programs and Features) > Uninstall a program. 
  7. Reinstall the Lexmark Series Printer using the Lexmark installer software. NOTE: Driver should be Windows 7 driver or newer.
  8. Click OK or Apply.
  9. After the reinstall of the printer, open the Printer Properties > Ports tab and check the “Enable Bidirectional Support” checkbox. Click here for image.
  10. Restart the PC.
  11. Return to your Windows 8 app and try to reinitiate your print job.
