A 31.06 error indicates that the printer/MFP has detected a problem with the SmartChip located on the Image Basket. A service call will probably be required to solve this issue. Certain rare occurrences, however, such as a power fluctuation or a static discharge in the vicinity of the printer/MFP, can cause a false 31.06 error message to appear. In such cases, the error is only temporary and can be easily resolved without service.
Perform the following steps to determine if a service call is required:
Step Action 1
Power off the printer/MFP, wait 30 seconds, and then power it on again.
Did the error message return?
Yes: Continue to Step 2.
No: Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is working correctly.
If possible, connect the printer/MFP's power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet. In rare instances, a surge protector, extension cord or uninterruptible power supply (UPS), can generate false error messages.
