'88 Cartridge Low' or '88 Replace Cartridge' Error Message Persists after New Cartridge Installation on a Lexmark C54x/X54x Printer/MFP

Solution

Overview

 

Most Lexmark laser printers include a 'Toner Low' warning system. It informs customers that a replacement toner cartridge will be required soon. In most cases, you can continue using the printer while this message is displayed.

 

If the "88 Toner Low"or "88 Replace Cartridge" message remains even after installing a brand new toner cartridge (or a known existing “healthy” toner cartridge), the printer may need a firmware update to facilitate efficient toner usage.

 

 

Troubleshooting

Restart the printer and see if the error will clear. If it doesn't clear, proceed with the next step.

Check the type of error:

  • If it is an 88 Cartridge Low message, press the Go button to take the printer temporarily to the Ready state. Proceed with the next step for a code update. 
     
  • If an 88 Replace Cartridge message displays, force the printer/MFP to boot into Invalid Engine Code. To do this, restart the printer while pressing the appropriate buttons as described below:

    • For the C540/3/4/6 and X543/4/6 series:
      Press and hold: Back and Left Arrow.
       
    • For the X548 series models:
      Press and hold: 3, 4, and 6.

Click your printer model below to download the zipped file containing executable file, firmware, and “Read me” files. Save it to a known location or folder in your computer.

Unzip the file and follow the instructions in the "Read me" file to update the code levels. If you experience difficulties or if the error persists, contact Lexmark Technical Support.
