Problem
Error: Cannot print unless an item is selected. Select an item and then try to print again;
Environment
Microsoft Windows 95; IBM IJ4070; Lexmark Z703 Photo Jetprinter; Microsoft Windows 98; Microsoft Windows ME; Microsoft Windows 2000; Microsoft Outlook 2002; This behavior occurs because of a corrupted printer settings file in Microsoft Outlook.
Solution
To resolve this problem, you need to exit Outlook, locate and delete the printer settings file (outlprint) and then restart Outlook.
To do this in Windows 98:
- Go to Start, point to Find and click Files or Folders. A Find All Files screen appears.
- In the Named box, type outlprint.
- Verify that your entire hard disk is being searched. (In the Look in box, browse to My Computer and select it. Then select the Include subfolders option.)
- Click Find Now to search for the file.
- When the outlprint file is located, right click it and then select Delete.
- Close the Find screen.
To do this In Windows 2000/Windows Me:
- Go to Start, point to Find and click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type outlprint.
- Verify that your entire hard disk is being searched. (In the Look in box, browse to My Computer and select it. Then select the Include subfolders option.)
- Click Search Now to search for the file.
- When the outlprint file is located, right click it and then select Delete.
- Close the Search screen.
To do this in Windows XP/Vista and Windows 7:
You will need to navigate to a hidden folder on your root drive, delete the corrupt (outlprint) file, and the restart Outlook.
Copy and paste the following path into the Windows Explorer address bar to locate the file.
- Windows XP – C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
- Windows Vista and Windows 7 – C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\
