What you will see
The printer stops printing and displays a 202 type 'Paper Jam' message (202.01, 202.02, etc.). When you open the printer, one or more sheets of paper are stuck inside the printer.
Locating the paper jam
When a sheet of paper jams, a numeric error code, along with the location of the jammed page, should appear on the printer's screen. Use this information to find and clear the jammed page.
NOTE: You may also choose to select Show Areas on the operator panel to view one or more images to help you clear the jam.
Clearing the paper jam
Step Action 1 Open the left-hand side access cover ('Door A') by lifting the release latch and lowering the door.
2 Pull any jammed print media up and towards you. Important! If the print media does not move easily when you pull, stop pulling. Find the green lever on the fuser unit (see figure in image below). Repeatedly push down and pull up on the green lever to manually advance the jammed page. This will make it easier to remove. Confirm that you have removed all paper fragments from the printer.
Note: If you cannot find any paper jammed in the printer, power it off. Wait twenty seconds or more, then power it back on. Should the paper jam error return, open all access doors/covers and confirm no remaining jammed sheets of print media are located elsewhere in the printer. If after searching you still cannot locate a jammed page in the printer, a service action may be required. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or an authorized service provider for additional assistance.

If the print job consisted of more than one page, you may wish to confirm that the entire paper path is clear before continuing. Do this by opening all of the access doors/covers and confirm there are no remaining jammed sheets of print media located elsewhere in the printer. Once the entire paper path is clear, close all opened access doors and covers.
5 Press to clear the jam message and resume printing.
Note: The printer will print a new copy of the pages that jammed if Jam Recovery is set to On or Auto. However, the Auto setting is dependent on the printer's amount of memory. It does not guarantee that the jammed pages will print again.
If another Paper Jam message instructs you to look in a different area of the printer, another sheet of print media is jammed there. Access the area indicated by the error and remove any jammed media. To view a diagram illustrating all the access doors/covers, click here, or select Show Areas on the operator panel to view one or more images to help you locate the jam. After locating and removing the jammed page(s), press to clear the message and resume printing.Note: It may be necessary to repeat this procedure for each new paper jam location until all of the jammed sheets are removed.
If the paper jams continue
- Confirm that the area indicated in the error is clear of all jammed paper and paper fragments.
- Make sure the paper/print media is properly loaded into the paper tray, including:
- Confirm the paper stack does not pass the 'max fill line' indicator on the tray.
- Confirm that the paper tray is fully pushed in.
- Confirm the paper support guides on the tray are set in the correct position. The support guides should lightly rest against the paper stack, preventing the stack from shifting while also not binding the paper. In addition, the position of the paper guides indicates the printer paper size setting for each tray.
- Do not mix different sizes or types of paper in the same tray.
NOTE: For more detailed tray loading instructions, refer to the printer's User's Guide.
- Remove the paper trays and check for a sheet of paper jammed behind the trays.
- Never slam the paper trays closed when reloading them. Slamming the trays closed can damage them and create paper jam issues.
- Try printing on plain copy paper if you are not already doing so. Please try this even if the print media you are using has worked in the past. Certain specialty media are more difficult for the printer to feed, and they can increase the chances of jamming.

- If the jamming continues after all of the above recommendations have been tried, the printer may require service to fix the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance. NOTE: When contacting Lexmark Technical Support, or arranging a service call, try to provide as much of the following information as possible:
- The full numeric error code
- The location where the jammed page is located
- Is the leading edge of the page damaged, or does it appear to be caught on anything?
- Is the jammed page crooked?
- Provide as much information on the paper used as possible: manufacturer, brand name, size and weight, hole-punched or perforated?
